    Diseases Mosquitoes Carry

    The West Nile Virus

The most common virus mosquitos transmit to humans is the West Nile Virus, which causes no symptoms up to 80% of the time. When symptoms appear, usually up to 15 days after the bite, people tend to have headaches, fever, muscle aches and pain, tiredness, rash, nausea and vomiting.

    The Zika Virus

This virus is mosquito-borne and can cause mild sicknesses such as headaches, muscle and joint pain, skin rash and fever. Some people infected will get sick, but rest and fluids for a week or more can help alleviate the symptoms. There is no one treatment or vaccine for this virus as of yet.

There is some talk among the medical community about a suspected link between this virus and babies suffering from microcephaly, a congenital disability that hinders brain development and leads to extremely tiny head sizes.

How to Keep Your Backyard Mosquito Free

Here are 5 Tips to Keep Mosquitos from Invading Your Outdoor Space

Mosquitos love overgrown grass, trees and brushes because of the shade it provides them. Make sure to eliminate the shade as much as possible. The more sunlight gets into your yard, the less wet areas will be available for mosquitos to make their own.
Mosquitos love standing water, using it as a breeding ground. The simplest way to fight mosquitos is to inspect your yard for pools of water. Look at your kids’ toys, garbage cans, plant trays, pools, etc. Bear in mind that a swimming pool contains chlorine, which repels mosquitos.

When it rains, go outside to see if there is any drainage issue. If you have standing water after a downpour, you may need to do some work to keep water from collecting.
Some lights will help get your mosquito problem under control. Most people know about citronella candles, but there are outdoor bulbs that you can use. These are bug lights, which are yellow lights that emit light at a wavelength that won’t attract bugs. They alone don’t keep them away entirely, but you won’t see a vast number of bugs flying around the light (as you see with other lights).

You can also purchase bug-repelling lanterns (using batteries or butane) when you’re outside enjoying the evening. They work in two ways: provide you light to enjoy the dark and ensure the bugs are kept away during your time outside.

Side Note – Do not use bug zapper lights, as they don’t help reduce mosquitos in your area and can kill insects that help the environment.
There are several types of plants that naturally repel mosquitos and should definitely be included in your yard. The most common type of plant is citronella, which is a clump of grass that produces a strong smell that covers other smells that bugs love. You can also use geraniums, pennyroyal and marigolds to repel mosquitos.
If all the do-it-yourself methods have done little to curb the mosquito population in your yard, it may be time to hire a professional. Hartz Pest Control’s trained exterminators are well trained mosquito control solutions that are kid and pet friendly.

The technician will come out and inspect your yard, make recommendations and create an individualized mosquito management plan to tackle your particular problem without endangering the lives of other helpful insects like butterflies and bees.
